Hi, I’m Kelly Kristensen

I’m a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and the founder of Brightside Counselling. I have completed a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology (MACP) from Yorkville University (conferral pending).

“No human being is ever beyond redemption. The possibility of renewal exists so long as life exists.”— Gabor Maté”

I’ve always been fascinated by people. What makes us who we are, what makes us tick, how we connect with each other, and why we sometimes get stuck in patterns that don’t really work for us anymore.

I’ve spent years working in addictions, in private facilities, community settings, and inpatient care. One thing that has stayed with me through all of that work is how important connection is. Connection is the opposite of addiction. Everyone deserves support, and nobody should have to figure everything out on their own.

I’m a very strength-based therapist. I want you to understand what’s going on and work through the hard stuff, but I also want you to see what you’re already doing well. I’m probably a little bit of a glitter bomb and a cheerleader, and I genuinely believe in celebrating your wins along the way.

I also believe relationships take work. Whether you’re trying to reconnect with your partner, communicate differently, rebuild trust, or feel closer again, there are tools we can learn and practice together.

I want therapy to be a place where you can be honest, laugh when we can, cry when we need to, and do the work without taking ourselves too seriously. I’m not here to fix you. I’m here to help you understand yourself, build on what’s already there, and make the changes you’re ready to make. There will be hard conversations, some uncomfortable moments, and hopefully a fair amount of laughter too. Through it all, I’ll be in your corner.

My approach

Therapy tailored to you

I’ll support you, but I won’t just tell you what you want to hear. I’ll help you recognize your strengths, understand what’s getting in your way, and gently challenge you when it’s time to grow.

I don’t believe there’s one approach that works for everyone. I get to know you, what you’re dealing with, and what you want to change, then we figure out what will be most helpful.

My work is particularly informed by:

  • Trauma-informed therapy
  • EMDR
  • Gottman Method Couples Therapy
  • Addictions counselling
  • Attachment-informed approaches
  • Emotional regulation and nervous-system awareness
  • Cognitive and behavioural approaches
